Kantha is embroidery in simple running stitches, worked on saris, quilts and other clothing and home textiles, and Birbhum in West Bengal is known for it.
Kantha is embroidery in simple running stitches, traditionally worked on recycled fabric such as saris or dhotis (National Portal of India, Nakshi Kantha). It is a household craft of women in West Bengal and Bangladesh, and its name is traced to the Sanskrit word kontha, meaning rags (Impart, Kantha Embroidery).
A traditional kantha is flat, unwadded quilting worked through several layers of cloth, often worn sari lengths softened by use and washing. Coloured threads were pulled from the sari borders and reused for the decorative stitching (Victoria and Albert Museum, Kantha). Where a sari's border is decorated, it can become the border of the quilt (Impart, Kantha Embroidery).
The stitching joins embroidered patterns, from simple flowers to whole scenes, with running-stitch quilting in a colour that matches the ground. On older quilts the quilting runs around the embroidered motifs, a technique known as echo quilting (Victoria and Albert Museum, Kantha). The running stitch is the basic stitch of most designs, and common motifs include flowers, vines, mangoes and the tree of life. Where the embroidery is thick and close, both sides of the cloth can look the same (Impart, Kantha Embroidery).
Kanthas were made by women for their own homes, as bedcovers, mats and all-purpose wrappers (Victoria and Albert Museum, Kantha). Their forms follow their use: the lep kantha is a thick quilt of several layers, the arshilata covers mirrors and combs, the durjani is a bag made by stitching three corners of a square together, and the oaar is a pillowcase (Impart, Kantha Embroidery).
Birbhum district in West Bengal is known for kantha-stitched saris, kurtas and churidars, and the stitch is used for quilts, dupattas and other clothing and home textiles (National Portal of India, Nakshi Kantha). In the 1940s the craft was encouraged by revivalist artists at Shantiniketan (Impart, Kantha Embroidery), which lies within the Bolpur municipal area of Birbhum (Birbhum District Administration, Bolpur). Today kantha is often worked on new fabric, and the word usually names the stitching style rather than the layered cloth itself (Victoria and Albert Museum, Kantha).
